Over the years, I have seen many organizations use MS-Excel as a database. I have also been tempted and joined the ‘Cult of Excel’ from time to time.
This morning, I stumbled across this interesting article, regarding the use of MS-Excel within organizations.
I thought that the comment regarding getting IT to do anything which would take longer than 30 minutes was interesting; and possibly true.
It there really a problem with using MS-Excel as a DBMS? Not really, except that it becomes a silo. Do a Google search on ‘excel silo problems’ and there does appear to be a lot of chatter on this subject.
I vaguely remember a product that attempted to solve this issue by combining the MS-Excel spreadsheet silo’s together. I must see if I can find it again.
